Kwara Assembly Approves Constitutional Amendment for State Police

By Tunde Akanbi, Ilorin

The Kwara State House of Assembly has approved a proposed amendment to the 1999 Constitution to provide a legal framework for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.

The approval was given during plenary in Ilorin, the state capital, following the reading of a letter from the Clerk of the National Assembly by the Speaker, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu.

Leading the debate on the proposed constitutional amendment, the House Leader, Mogaji Oba Abdulkadri, highlighted its potential benefits to the country’s policing system.

Abdulkadri said the proposed reform would provide an opportunity to strengthen policing and improve the country’s response to security challenges.

Other lawmakers who contributed to the debate supported the proposal, arguing that the establishment of state police would bring law enforcement closer to the people and improve the protection of lives and property across the country.

They expressed the view that a decentralised policing system would enable law enforcement agencies to respond more effectively to security concerns within their respective communities.

Following the deliberations, the Speaker directed the Clerk of the House, Ahmed Olayiwola, to formally communicate the Assembly’s approval to the National Assembly for further legislative action.
