Kwara Varsity Unveils Gender Studies Centre, Pushes For Equality

Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, has launched its Centre for Gender Studies to promote gender equity, research and inclusive development.

Speaking at the launch, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, said the centre would serve as a platform for research, advocacy, capacity building and policy engagement on gender-related issues.

He noted that many women and vulnerable groups still face barriers to digital access and skills development despite the growing importance of technology.

Acting Director of the Centre, Dr Latifat Olatinwo, said the facility was established to advance scholarship, innovation and national development through a gender-focused approach.

Delivering the keynote address, Professor Janice Olawoye stressed the need to close the gender gap in digital access, describing digital literacy as essential for communication, commerce and online safety.

Also speaking, gender expert Dr Olawunmi Cordilia Macaulay-Adeyelure called for stronger measures to protect women from online harassment and urged stakeholders to focus on meaningful digital inclusion.

The centre is expected to strengthen research, advocacy and policy engagement on gender issues while promoting digital literacy and sustainable development.
