Preparations for the maiden National Intermediate Games, gathered momentum as Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, inaugurated the Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the Games.
Tagged, NIG 2026, the National Intermediate Games will hold in Lagos in October 2026.
The ceremony was attended by the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, who had earlier led members of the committee on a courtesy visit to the Governor as stakeholders intensified planning for the landmark event.

“I am impressed by the level of preparedness and commitment demonstrated by Lagos State as we conclude our inspection tour ahead of the maiden National Intermediate Games,” Olopade stated.
“Over the past three days, we inspected key competition venues, athlete accommodation facilities and support infrastructure across the state. What we have seen gives us every confidence that Lagos is ready to host a world-class Games.”
“It will set a new benchmark for athlete development and sports excellence in Nigeria. The National Intermediate Games is a critical pillar of our sports development agenda.”
“It is designed to bridge the gap between youth sports and elite competition, creating a sustainable pathway for talent discovery, nurturing and progression,” he revealed.
Governor Sanwoolu charged the committee to deliver a world-class competition, describing the Games as a critical platform for talent discovery, youth development and national integration.
The National Intermediate Games will bring together young athletes from across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, creating another pathway for the identification and development of future champion.
