The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with Interferry, has launched a Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme, the first of its kind in Africa.
Interferry is a global ferry industry association that holds consultative status at the International Maritime Organization.
The 18-month programme aims to raise safety and professional standards on Lagos waterways through training for 50 industry operators.
Driven by top Interferry experts, maritime schools, shipping firms, and regulators, the hybrid programme blends online learning, virtual mentoring, and monthly practical sessions.

The programme will officially kick off on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.
Key modules cover ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance techniques, both preventive and predictive.
Participants include ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers, safety officers, compliance staff, and fleet managers.
The Lagos State Waterways Authority said that intake verification was completed on March 18, 2026, with all 50 applicants meeting the selection criteria.
The launch event will feature mentor introductions, programme briefings, and stakeholder engagement.
Mentorship will be provided by Interferry experts, supported by facilitators from Nigerian maritime institutions, leading industry companies, and regulatory agencies.
LASWA described the initiative as part of the Lagos State Government’s commitment to building safer waterways and developing a professionally competitive ferry transportation system.
