The Director General, Michael Imoudu National Institute for Labour Studies (MINILS), Ilorin, Comrade Issa Aremu has extended deepest condolences to the Members of the National Executive Council (NEC), the entire members of the Nigeria Labour Congress on the passing of Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Congress.
Ugboaja died last week after a protracted illness. In a statement in Ilorin, MINILS DG recalled that “Comrade Ugboaja’s contribution to the Nigerian labour movement was both distinguished and enduring.
“As the 5th General Secretary of NLC, a member of National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS)Kuru Jos and a lawyer, he dedicated his career to trade unionism, brought rare intellectual rigour and steadfast commitment to the cause of workers’ welfare.
” His tireless advocacy for the implementation of the national minimum wage and his unrelenting pursuit of decent work, fair wages and dignity for the Nigerian worker, exemplified the very ideals upon which the labour movement was founded,” he said.
According to him, his leadership at the helm of Congress administration, coordinating affiliates, negotiating with government and employers and mobilising workers, leaves an indelible legacy of service, sacrifice and principled unionism that will continue to inspire generations of labour leaders.
He explained further that his demise created a vacuum within the NLC and the broader labour family, one that will be deeply felt in the months and years ahead.
“We take comfort in knowing that the values he championed and the foundations he helped strengthen will endure. The statement prayed that God grant the Congress, his family and all who mourn him the fortitude to bear this great loss”.
MINILS also mourned the passing of a distinguished Nigerian media professional, Mr. Dotun Oladipo, former President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) and Publisher of The Eagle Online.
