Morocco has announced its candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the 2028-2029 term.
The Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, announced the bid during the general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
Bourita explained that Morocco’s candidacy reflected the Kingdom’s “firm determination” to contribute effectively and responsibly to the maintenance of international peace and security.
He noted that the bid was grounded in a “realistic and solidarity-based” vision of international cooperation, in strict adherence to international law and the principles of national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Foreign Minister said the candidacy drew on Morocco’s diplomatic achievements over centuries and the vision of King Mohammed VI to cement the country’s position as a key and reliable player in promoting stability and sustainable development.
The proposed seat, Bourita stressed, would enable Morocco to continue its “noble mission” of advancing peace, strengthening collective security and championing multilateral action in line with the UN Charter.
He described the candidacy as the “culmination” of Morocco’s contributions to the three pillars of the international system: maintenance of international peace and security, sustainable development and upholding the rule of law.
