NAF Deploys Pumps to Recover Crashed Aircraft in Ondo

By Martha Obi, Abuja

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has deployed multiple pumping machines to facilitate access to the main wreckage of its crashed aircraft at Igbokoda, Ondo State, as recovery personnel intensify efforts to overcome challenging underwater conditions and difficult riverbed terrain.

The Air Force said the wreckage remains submerged and deeply embedded in the riverbed, making the recovery operation complex and demanding.

The deployment of pumping equipment is expected to help remove water from the area surrounding the crash site and facilitate the next phase of the operation.

Despite the challenges, the NAF said significant progress was being made, with personnel continuing to work towards accessing the main wreckage through sustained efforts, specialised technical support and careful coordination.

The Service said the safety of recovery personnel and the dignity of the victims remained priorities throughout the operation.

These updates were contained in a statement issued on Friday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

As recovery efforts continue, the Air Officer Commanding, Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal MC Ekwueme, has visited Igbokoda on the directive of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, to engage community leaders and residents over concerns about the potential impact of the operation on their water source.

During the engagement, Ekwueme acknowledged the concerns raised by residents and assured them of the NAF’s commitment to addressing the issues through appropriate channels.

He also commended the community for its patience and cooperation during the difficult period.

The NAF reiterated its commitment to sustained engagement with residents as the recovery operation progresses, noting that it recognises the environmental concerns associated with the exercise.

NAF Assures Bereaved Families of Welfare Support

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff has reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to supporting bereaved families affected by the incident.

According to the statement, applicable entitlements, including benevolent funds, scholarships for eligible children and other approved welfare benefits, will be processed for the affected families.

Recovery Operations

The NAF emphasised that its responsibility to the bereaved families extends beyond the recovery operation, assuring them of continued assistance with compassion, dignity and a strong sense of duty.

To facilitate communication and ensure families receive timely and appropriate information, the Service said it had established a dedicated helpline at Headquarters Nigerian Air Force.

The NAF further assured Nigerians that recovery efforts would continue, alongside engagement with the Igbokoda community and support for affected families.

It pledged to provide verified updates on significant developments as the operation progresses.
