The Nigerian Navy, in collaboration with other security agencies, have foiled an illegal recruitment and training scheme in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, arresting 12 suspects linked to the operation.
According to a statement issued by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the operation was carried out by personnel of Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) JUBILEE in conjunction with Headquarters 2 Brigade/Operation THUNDER, 6 Battalion Nigerian Army, and operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command.
The joint security team acted on credible intelligence regarding the activities of a purported Nigeria Coast Guard Academy operating at Uwa West, Essien Udim.
During the raid, security operatives stormed the Merchant Seaman Academy, which was allegedly being used as a centre for the unauthorised recruitment and training of individuals presented as provisional cadets of the purported agency.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the recruitment and training activities were neither authorised nor recognised under existing laws and regulatory frameworks, raising concerns that unsuspecting Nigerians could be deceived through false promises of employment and career opportunities in the maritime sector.
The operation led to the arrest of 12 individuals, including six suspected organisers and officials, five recruits or trainees, and one cadet of the Merchant Seaman Academy.

The suspects have since been handed over to the Violent Crime Response Unit of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Navy said “the operation underscores its commitment to identifying and neutralising emerging threats before they evolve into broader security and public safety concerns”.
It also noted that the crackdown disrupted an alleged scheme designed to exploit the aspirations of young Nigerians seeking careers in the maritime and security sectors.
The Nigerian Navy advised members of the public to exercise caution when responding to recruitment advertisements from organisations claiming to offer opportunities in military, maritime, or security services.
It urged prospective applicants to verify the authenticity and legal status of such organisations through relevant government authorities before making payments or submitting personal information.
The Navy further reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with sister security agencies to protect citizens, combat criminal activities, and prevent fraudulent schemes aimed at exploiting the public.
