NDC Leadership Calls for Unity, Transparency

By Chioma Eche, Abuja

The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for unity among its members, transparency in party finances and collective support for its candidates ahead of the forthcoming elections.

The National Chairman of the party, Moses Zuwoghe, made the call during the party’s National Executive Committee meeting in Abuja, where he outlined measures to reconcile aggrieved members, strengthen party structures and promote accountability.

Zuwoghe said the party had established reconciliation committees across the country’s geopolitical zones to engage members who were dissatisfied with the outcome of its primaries.

He commended aspirants who had accepted the results and pledged to support the party’s candidates, describing reconciliation as essential to building a united political platform.

The chairman also announced plans for the inauguration of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council and the presentation of Certificates of Return to its candidates.

He stressed the importance of preparing young Nigerians for leadership, describing the NDC as a generational party committed to mentorship and national development.

On financial accountability, Zuwoghe said transparency in managing party resources was necessary to build public confidence, insisting that political parties must be accountable and comply with relevant financial reporting requirements.

He maintained that the party was determined to operate in accordance with its constitution and establish a credible alternative for Nigerians.

Also speaking, former National Chairman of the party, Senator Victor Umeh, urged members to support all candidates who emerge from the party’s nomination processes, warning against anti-party activities.

Umeh said aspirants should be given a level playing field during primaries, but once candidates emerge, party members and officials must unite behind them.

He argued that supporting the party’s presidential candidate while opposing its governorship or legislative candidates would undermine its electoral prospects.

The former chairman therefore appealed to state and local government chapter leaders, members of the National Executive Committee and other stakeholders to put aside personal differences and work collectively for the party’s success.

Party Finances

On the party’s finances, Umeh commended the leadership for presenting its financial report, describing transparency as essential to building public trust.

He referred to a reported financial inflow of about six billion naira as seed money for the party’s operations and urged members to contribute towards strengthening its finances.

Umeh also appealed to the leadership to consider returning an appropriate proportion of nomination fees to state chapters to support their administrative operations and political programmes.

He said stronger state structures, financial accountability and party discipline would improve the NDC’s preparedness for future elections.
