The Nigerian Government has awarded contracts for the rehabilitation of 13 police training institutions across the country.
The three-week rehabilitation programme is aimed at preparing the institutions for the commencement of training programmes by the Nigeria Police Force.
The update was presented on Thursday in Abuja at the 160th meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC), chaired by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
Briefing State House Correspondents at the end of the meeting, the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa said “the move was in line with the Nigerian government’s desire to give more attention to the training of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force.”
Governor Aiyedatiwa emphasised that the government is well focused on improving the efficiency of the nation’s police force through adequate training of personnel.
He said “the National Economic Council received briefing from its adhoc committee of the rehabilitation of police training institutions, where it was told that processes are already in place for achieving the desire of giving a facelift to the police training institutions.”
“The Council was made to understand that contracts have been awarded for the rehabilitation of 13 across the country and 80 percent of the contractors have received their award letters.
The Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai, who also spoke on the matter, disclosed that “more funds would soon be released to the contractors.”
“The Ministry of Finance has committed that by next week, the remainder of the funds needed to pay the contractors would be released and Council expects that the contractors selected will be prompt in delivering on the mandate given to them by virture of the contract,” he stated.
Mr Ossai also assured Nigerians that the training of police personnel would be sustained, adding that all citizens have a role to play in ensuring the nation is well secured by giving the needed information and cooperation to security agencies personnel.
