Nigeria, China Strengthen Meteorological Development Partnership

Margaret Ebeshi, Abuja

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have strengthened cooperation on early warning systems, satellite technology and institutional development to improve meteorological services in Nigeria.

The commitment was made during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the 2026 Alliance for Hydromet Development Annual Meeting.

In his opening remarks, CMA Deputy Administrator, Mr. Song Shanyun, commended NiMet’s Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Professor Charles Anosike, and congratulated the Nigerian Government on hosting the annual meeting.

Shanyun said Nigeria, through NiMet, had demonstrated leadership in meteorological development, assuring that CMA was ready to support efforts to strengthen weather services in Nigeria and beyond.

He identified three priority areas for cooperation as the joint development of the MAZU operational platform for Nigeria; expanded use of Fengyun satellite technology to improve meteorological observations; and enhanced capacity-building and institutional development.

Responding, Anosike thanked CMA and the Chinese Government for deploying a six-member delegation to the meeting, describing the participation as evidence of China’s commitment to advancing meteorological development globally.

He called for the formalisation of the partnership through a memorandum of understanding to align the collaboration with Nigeria’s socioeconomic priorities and practical meteorological needs.

During the engagement, CMA presented NiMet with two tablet devices equipped with the MAZU artificial intelligence agent, designed to support urban multi-hazard early warning.

The devices will serve as dedicated intelligent terminals for delivering meteorological early-warning information, helping to strengthen preparedness and improve access to timely weather alerts.

Both institutions also agreed to establish a regular communication mechanism to coordinate joint development activities and sustain progress in the proposed areas of cooperation.
