Nigeria Moves to Stenghten Educational Co-operation with Hungary

Nigeria has called for an increase in scholarship slots allocated to its students under Hungary’s Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme.

This is to enable more qualified Nigerians benefit from higher education opportunities in the European country.

Nigeria’s Ambassador to Hungary, Engr. Abass Braimah, made the appeal during a working visit to the headquarters of Tempus Public Foundation in Budapest.

Braimah, accompanied by the Deputy Head of Mission and Minister Plenipotentiary, Mrs. Vivienne Ogonyi, was received by the Foundation’s Director-General, Mr. Péter Tordai, and the Director of Study in Hungary, Ms Orsolya Jánosik.

The meeting focused on strengthening educational cooperation between Nigeria and Hungary, particularly through the Stipendium Hungaricum Programme, which provides opportunities for international students to study at Hungarian Universities.

Braimah said the current allocation of 50 scholarship slots for Nigeria was inadequate, given the country’s large population and the number of students seeking international educational opportunities.

He urged the foundation to increase Nigeria’s allocation to enable more qualified applicants benefit from the programme.

The ambassador also encouraged eligible Nigerians to apply when applications open in November 2026.

The visit forms part of the Nigerian Embassy’s ongoing efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Nigeria and Hungary, expand educational partnerships and support Nigerian students pursuing higher education in Hungary.
