The Nigerian Government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, has handed over newly completed Veterinary Primary Health Centres to the governments of Lagos and Ogun states to improve animal healthcare services and livestock productivity across the country.
The Veterinary Primary Health Centre located in Epe, Lagos State, was officially presented to the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems on May 13, 2026, while the facility in Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State, was handed over earlier on May 5 to the Ogun State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security through the Assistant Director of Veterinary Services.
The projects form part of the Nigerian Government’s nationwide initiative to establish 774 Veterinary Primary Health Centres across all local government areas in Nigeria.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Epe, the Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, represented by the Director of Animal Health and Reproductive Services, Dr Alao Mitchell, said; “the initiative was designed to bring veterinary healthcare services closer to livestock farmers.’
He explained that the centres would improve disease surveillance, prevention and control while also supporting rural livelihoods, livestock productivity, and national food security.
Mr Maiha also commended the contributions and support of Hon Olawale Raji Elenwhe toward the successful completion of the Epe project.
According to the ministry, “the facilities are fitted with consultation and treatment rooms, laboratories, offices, storage units, water supply systems, electricity, and perimeter fencing to support effective veterinary service delivery.”
The handover ceremonies attracted government officials, veterinary experts, traditional leaders, livestock stakeholders, community representatives, and members of the media from both Lagos and Ogun states.
