Nigeria Postpones Global AMR Ministerial Conference

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced the postponement of the 5th Global High-Level Ministerial Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), which was scheduled to take place in Abuja from June 28 to 30, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the government said the decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders and partners involved in preparations for the global conference.

According to the statement, a new date for the conference will be communicated in due course, while preparations and stakeholder engagements will continue to ensure the successful hosting of the event at a later time.

The Federal Government expressed regret over any inconvenience the postponement may cause and thanked stakeholders, partners, delegates, and the public for their understanding, support, and continued cooperation.

Nigeria also conveyed appreciation to the Troika, the Global Leaders Group on Antimicrobial Resistance, the Quadripartite Joint Secretariat on AMR, Member States, development partners, international organisations, civil society groups, academia, youth networks, and other stakeholders for their commitment to the conference.

The Government reaffirmed that it remains honoured to host the important global gathering and is committed to advancing international collaboration and collective action against antimicrobial resistance through the One Health approach.

The statement noted that preparatory activities would continue under the supervision of the Local Organising Committee and relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies of the Federal Government.

It added that engagement with partners and stakeholders would be sustained to ensure a successful and impactful conference when a new date is announced.

Describing antimicrobial resistance as one of the most significant global health challenges of the modern era, the Federal Government stressed the need for sustained commitment and coordinated action across countries and sectors to tackle the growing threat.

Nigeria expressed optimism about welcoming delegates to Abuja for the rescheduled conference and contributing to strengthened global efforts to combat antimicrobial resistance.
