Nigerian is set to commence urgent agricultural farming to enhance the economy in the country.

An expert, former Statistician-General and CEO of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), Dr. Yemi Kale stated this after a survey conducted across the country revealed that poorest households in the country only engaged in subsistence agriculture.

He called for improved practice of agriculture on a large scale, adding that because many challenges are associated with subsistence agriculture such as high susceptibility to climate change, labour intensive, and severe lack of training on key aspects, it cannot be relied upon to achieve food sufficiency.

“Agriculture plays a critical role in transforming the economy. As such, to accelerate economic growth, urgent agricultural transformation must become a reality.

“This can be achieved only when Nigeria successfully advances it’s largely subsistence farming-focused sector towards sustainable and structured commercial farming through the use of technology,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has said over 70% of Nigerians engage in agriculture mainly at a subsistence level.
