Nigeria’s Inflation Rises To 15.69 Percent In April

The National Bureau of Statistics says Nigeria’s headline inflation rate increased to 15.69 percent in April 2026 from 15.38 per cent recorded in March 2026.

The bureau disclosed this in its latest Consumer Price Index report, which showed that the CPI rose to 138.3 points in April, reflecting a 2.9-point increase from the preceding month.

According to the report, the inflation rate was lower than the 26.82 percent recorded in April 2025, indicating a year-on-year decline.

The NBS said the month-on-month headline inflation rate stood at 2.13 per cent in April 2026, lower than the 4.18 per cent recorded in March 2026.

The report identified Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages, Restaurants and Accommodation Services, and Transport as the major contributors to headline inflation during the period.

Food inflation stood at 16.06 per cent on a year-on-year basis in April 2026, compared to 24.68 percent recorded in April 2025.

On a month-on-month basis, food inflation declined to 3.63 per cent in April from 4.17 percent recorded in March 2026.

The bureau attributed the movement in food prices to changes in the average prices of millet, yam flour, fresh ginger, beef, garri, yam tuber, fresh pepper, crayfish, cassava tuber, beans, Irish potatoes, tomatoes and wheat grain, among other items.

Core inflation, which excludes volatile agricultural produce and energy prices, stood at 15.86 per cent year-on-year in April 2026.

On a month-on-month basis, core inflation dropped to 1.03 per cent from 4.03 per cent recorded in March 2026.

The report also showed newly introduced sub-indices recorded varying increases, with farm produce at 6.0 per cent, energy at 8.0 per cent, services at 2.1 per cent, goods at 3.2 per cent and imported food at 4.4 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

On urban and rural inflation, the NBS said urban inflation stood at 15.40 per cent year-on-year, while rural inflation was higher at 16.36 per cent in April 2026.

At the state level, Sokoto, Bauchi and Zamfara recorded the highest year-on-year all-items inflation rates, while Edo, Borno and Jigawa posted the slowest rise.

For food inflation, Enugu, Kwara and Adamawa recorded the highest year-on-year increases, while Borno, Jigawa and Taraba posted the slowest growth in food prices.
