The Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), Professor Charles Anosike, has joined global meteorological leaders at a World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) dialogue on climate science information for climate finance in Beijing, China.
Anosike called for increased climate financing and the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in early warning systems at the dialogue.
The dialogue brought together senior officials to examine ways of strengthening the capacity of National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs) to mobilise climate finance and deliver climate services that support resilience and sustainable development.
Discussions at the forum focused on strengthening the role and leadership development of NMHSs in mobilising climate finance, while aligning scientific and technical capabilities with risk-informed, people-centred early warning systems.

Participants also examined the need to shift from technical assistance to sustainable investments through stronger cooperation between meteorological institutions and multilateral financing entities.
The programme further emphasised support for NMHS leadership in strengthening “strategic thinking and fostering productive partnerships”.
Held alongside the dialogue was the 53rd Senior Official Field Exchange (SOFE), which took participants to Fujian Province for first-hand exposure to China’s Multi-hazard, Alert, Zero-gap and Universal (MAZU) platform.
The MAZU platform, described as an “AI-driven meteorological early warning solution, supports the Early Warnings for All (EW4All) initiative and disaster risk reduction efforts.
The field exchange featured technical exchanges, field visits and peer learning, providing participants with practical insights into the application of artificial intelligence and multi-hazard early warning systems.
Anosike’s participation underscores NiMet’s engagement in international efforts to strengthen climate science, mobilise climate finance and advance technology-driven early warning systems for improved disaster preparedness and climate resilience.
