The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kano State Command, has launched a statewide public awareness campaign to educate residents on the safe use and protection of telecommunications infrastructure during the rainy season.
The initiative aims to promote public safety while preventing the vandalism of critical telecommunications facilities across the state.
A statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, Ibrahim Abdullahi, said the State Commandant, Mohammed Hassan Agalama, described telecommunications infrastructure as a vital national asset that supports communication, security operations, emergency response, banking services and other economic activities.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Agalama warned residents against tampering with telecommunications masts, underground cables, power installations and other related facilities, describing such acts as economic sabotage that endanger public safety and national development.
He explained that heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds during the rainy season pose additional risks around telecommunications installations.
The Commandant advised residents not to seek shelter beneath telecommunications masts during storms and urged them to report any damaged or suspicious installations promptly to the nearest NSCDC office or other relevant authorities.
He stressed that protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure (CNAI) is a shared responsibility and directed all 44 divisional officers in the state to immediately extend the awareness campaign to grassroots communities.
According to him, officers will engage traditional rulers, community leaders, market associations, youth groups, schools, religious institutions and other stakeholders to educate the public on safeguarding telecommunications facilities and observing safety precautions during adverse weather conditions.
Agalama reaffirmed the Corps’ commitment to protecting Critical National Assets and Infrastructure, warning that anyone caught vandalising or interfering with telecommunications facilities would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
He also appealed to residents to support the Corps by providing credible and timely information to help prevent vandalism and ensure uninterrupted telecommunications services across Kano State.
The campaign will be coordinated by the Command’s Department of Critical National Assets and Infrastructure Protection, led by Deputy Commandant of Corps (DCC) Victor Bala Muhammed, to ensure its successful implementation across the state.
