The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has called for stronger security measures across the country, improved engagement between government and the media, and urgent action to address persistent water supply challenges in Abuja.
The resolutions were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the Council’s Congress held on Saturday, 6 June 2026, and attended by more than 500 members.
The Congress urged journalists to continue reporting security issues accurately, objectively and responsibly in the public interest, while maintaining professional ethics and holding public institutions accountable.
It also advised media practitioners to prioritise their personal safety and that of their families, particularly in view of prevailing security challenges. Journalists were encouraged to remain vigilant and adopt necessary security precautions in their daily activities.
On national security, the Congress called on security agencies to intensify efforts to combat insecurity and strengthen the protection of lives and property across the country. It stressed that the safety of citizens must remain a priority for governments and security institutions at all levels.
The Congress further emphasised the need for transparency and accuracy in official security communications, urging security agencies to provide timely and truthful information on incidents to sustain public confidence.
On education, members called for the full implementation of the Safe School Initiative nationwide, noting that many attacks and abductions in schools could be prevented through effective enforcement of existing security policies.
The Congress also urged the Federal and state governments to prioritise the protection of educational institutions through adequate perimeter fencing, deployment of security personnel, including members of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other necessary protective measures.
Expressing concern over persistent water supply challenges in the Federal Capital Territory, the Congress called on the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) to urgently address the situation and alleviate the hardship faced by residents.
The journalists also appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike, to strengthen engagement with media practitioners in the territory, particularly on issues relating to security reporting and public information management. According to the Congress, closer collaboration between government and the media would enhance public understanding of government policies and programmes.
In addition, the Congress urged the National Secretariat of the NUJ to organise regular seminars, workshops and conferences on national security reporting to equip journalists with the skills and knowledge required to report security matters professionally, responsibly and safely.
The Congress reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism, public-interest journalism, and the promotion of peace, security and national development, pledging to continue advocating policies and actions that enhance the well-being of all Nigerians.
