NUJ: Free Press Essential to National Development

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for stronger protection of press freedom and improved cooperation between security agencies and the media as the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day 2026.

In a statement issued by its National President, Comrade Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, the Union reaffirmed the importance of a free, independent and responsible press in advancing democracy, human rights and national development.

The NUJ noted that this year’s theme, “Shaping a Future at Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security,” reflects Nigeria’s realities, particularly the role of journalism in fostering peace, strengthening democratic institutions and promoting accountability.

The Union expressed cautious optimism over improving relations between the Department of State Services (DSS) and the media, noting a decline in reported cases of intimidation, harassment and arbitrary arrests of journalists.

It described this development as a positive step towards strengthening press freedom and democratic accountability in the country.

The NUJ commended the leadership of the DSS, particularly the Director-General, for promoting more professional engagement with the media, stressing that collaboration between security agencies and the press is essential for national peace and security.

However, the Union urged that the progress be sustained through continuous dialogue, transparency and strict adherence to the rule of law.

It also called on the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to respect the rights of journalists and ensure an enabling environment for media practice without fear or intimidation.

The NUJ reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and urged practitioners to uphold ethical standards based on accuracy, fairness and public interest.

It further stressed that the media and security institutions should be seen as partners in promoting peace, protecting human rights and advancing national development.

The Union called on government, security agencies, the media and citizens to renew their commitment to safeguarding press freedom as a foundation for a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.
