Onitsha Ofala Festival Marks Obi Achebe’s Silver Jubilee

The annual Ofala Festival in Onitsha, Anambra State, south east Nigeria, has showcased the richness of Nigeria’s cultural heritage through traditional dances, royal ceremonies and colourful processions, as the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe, marked 25 years of Ofala celebrations during his reign, highlighting efforts to preserve Igbo traditions and pass them on to younger generations.

The festival, held at Eze Chima Square, Onitsha, featured traditional performances, ceremonial processions and cultural displays under the theme “Igba Mbo, Iganiru” (Renewal and Progress). Indigenous telecommunications company Globacom Nigeria Limited sponsored the celebration.

Excitement reached its peak when Achebe emerged in his royal regalia following a period of seclusion ahead of the festival.

His appearance prompted cheers, songs and praise chants from the crowd, while traditional musicians intensified their performances to welcome the monarch.

The Obi subsequently danced around the arena, accompanied by his chiefs, in a ceremonial display highlighting the relationship between the throne, the traditional council and the wider community. The chiefs later approached the monarch in a formal show of respect, adding to the festival’s display of royal protocol and customary practices.

Speaking at the event, Achebe urged the people of Onitsha to draw inspiration from the resilience of their ancestors, preserve their cultural heritage and work collectively towards the advancement of the kingdom. He said the festival’s theme reflected the importance of unity, responsibility and purposeful progress.

The monarch also expressed concern about Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, including hardship among vulnerable households, unemployment and insecurity. He called on governments to adopt measures to ease the burden on poor Nigerians and address the difficulties confronting ordinary citizens.

Beyond the ceremonial spectacle, the Ofala Festival provides an avenue for transmitting cultural knowledge between generations. While older participants sustain customs inherited from their forebears, younger people experience their cultural identity through traditional dress, music, dance and communal participation.

Among the dignitaries at the celebration were the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha, Most Rev. Valerian Okeke, Sir Afam Ogene, member representing Ogbaru federal constituency; widow of the late Owelle of Onitsha, Professor Uche Azikiwe; Peter Obi,and Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Professor Ngozi Chuma-Udeh. They congratulated Achebe and acknowledged his contributions to the traditional institution and the development of Onitsha.

One of the festival’s highlights was the Egwuota dance performed by the Obi and the Ndi Ichie (traditional chiefs), which drew enthusiastic reactions from spectators. Accompanied by traditional drums and songs, the performance reinforced the cultural significance of the gathering and the role of communal celebrations in sustaining Onitsha’s traditions.

The Ofala Festival remains an important expression of Onitsha’s history and identity, combining royal ceremonies, traditional performance and community participation. Its continued observance highlights the contribution of Nigeria’s indigenous festivals to cultural preservation, intergenerational learning and the celebration of the country’s diverse heritage.
