PDP Crisis : Wabara-Led BoT Moves to Convene NEC

By Chika Eze, Abuja

The Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Senator Adolphus Wabara, has reassured members that the party will not succumb to forces of disintegration, declaring that it will emerge stronger despite its current challenges.

Addressing BoT members in Abuja on Sunday, Wabara said the party’s stability was preserved following the Supreme Court judgment of Thursday, April 30, 2026, which nullified the National Working Committee (NWC).

He noted that the BoT swiftly assumed administrative leadership in line with the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), thereby averting a leadership vacuum.

According to him, the apex court’s ruling annulled the 2025 National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led NWC and upheld the suspension of key conveners of the contentious March 29–30 convention in Abuja, effectively invalidating its outcome.

Wabara disclosed that since taking over, the BoT has received widespread solidarity messages from Nigerians across different sectors, reaffirming public confidence in the PDP’s resilience and capacity to rebound.

He said the support has strengthened the party’s resolve to overcome internal challenges and position itself to rescue Nigeria from the grip of the negative forces in the 2027 general elections.

The BoT Chairman also commended former NWC members, led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki (SAN), for what he described as their patriotism, loyalty, and resilience, alongside party governors, National Assembly caucus, state chairmen, and grassroots members for standing firm during the crisis.

Providing a chronology of events leading to the crisis, Wabara recalled that the party’s 101st NEC meeting in July 2025 approved the November 2025 National Convention in Ibadan, alongside other key decisions, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in attendance.

He explained that subsequent developments—including internal litigation allegedly initiated by suspended party officials—undermined the convention process, culminating in a court judgment that disrupted the party’s leadership structure

Wabara further noted that the suspension of certain party officers in November 2025 was later upheld by the Supreme Court, which affirmed that suspended officials can not perform party functions, thereby rendering actions taken during their suspension invalid.

Describing the crisis as a product of internal sabotage allegedly aided by external political interests, Wabara insisted that the PDP remains united and determined to overcome its challenges.
