President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football, aimed at addressing structural weaknesses blamed for the country’s repeated failure to qualify for major regional, continental and global tournaments.
The President said the reform would strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across the country’s football system.
In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, noted that while other sports have recorded progress following the restructuring of the sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football has continued to struggle despite receiving significant public support, investment and national attention.
President Tinubu highlighted that the country’s abundant football talent, passion and resources must now be matched by stronger institutions and consistent performance.
He further directed the Chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Secretariat and other relevant stakeholders to drive a broad and consultative reform process, while ensuring continuity in essential football administration.
The reform process will also involve engagement with the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) and the Confederation of African Football (CAF), while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations within the international football framework.
Calling for cooperation from stakeholders and Nigerians, President Tinubu said collective support would be critical to building a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.
