President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the cause of Monday’s ATR-42 jet crash in Ondo State, with a view to preventing a recurrence.
The President issued the directive after receiving a briefing from the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, following the crash near a naval base in the Igbokoda area of the state.
“The Chief of Air Staff has briefed me, and I have directed the Nigerian Air Force to immediately commence a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash to prevent future occurrences,” President Tinubu stated.
The aircraft, which was on a routine mission from Benin to Lagos, was carrying 25 passengers and seven crew members when the accident occurred.
President Tinubu expressed profound sadness over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of those involved, the Chief of the Air Staff and personnel of the Nigerian Air Force.
He described the crash as a painful moment for the Armed Forces and the nation, noting the sacrifices made daily by Air Force personnel in the defence of the country.
The President also commended the Nigerian Air Force for activating an immediate search-and-rescue operation following the accident, as well as the swift response of first responders and the Ondo State Government at the crash site.
He prayed for the repose of the souls of the personnel involved and for strength for their families and the Nigerian Air Force to bear the loss.
President Tinubu further assured the Air Force of his administration’s continued support as it carries out its responsibility of protecting the nation.
