Public Finances: Reps restate commitment to curtail wastage, corruption

The Nigerian House of Representatives says it will continue to use legislative measures to reduce wastage and corruption in the management of public finances in the country.

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, stated this in Abuja at an investigative hearing on the capital projects executed and funds repeated in appropriation acts from 2015 till date, by Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government across the nation.

Represented by the House Leader, Alh AlHassan Ado-Doguwa, Mr Gbajabiamila expressed concern over the trend saying that the measure would promote transparency and accountability in governance.

He expressed concern over the absence of many stakeholders in the public hearing saying that “The committee has the support of the Leadership of the House to do the right thing in accordance with the constitutional powers of the Legislature.

“Government is committed to the fight against corruption and the National Assembly as an institution and arm of government is also committed to that in line with its Legislative Agenda.”

The Chairman of the Adhoc Committee, Alh Abubakar Makki Yalleman while reiterating the Committee’s resolve to assist the executive arm in implementing the government’s policies and programmes to serve Nigerians.

“I urge the participants to give us maximum support and cooperation to achieve the objectives of setting up the Adhoc committee,” Yalleman added.

The Adhoc Committee on the matter was constituted following a motion on the need to investigates the alleged re-introduction of executed projects into budgets by government’s ministries and agencies.
