The Senegalese Government has officially endorsed former President Macky Sall’s candidacy for the position of the next United Nations Secretary-General, despite previous political disagreements between his administration and the current government.
The endorsement was announced by Senegal’s Foreign Ministry following President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s directive to the country’s diplomatic missions worldwide to mobilise support for Sall’s candidature.
The decision comes days after Sall paid his first visit to Dakar since leaving office in 2024, during which he met with President Faye.

The endorsement marks a significant shift in policy, as the Faye administration had earlier declined to support Sall, accusing his government of political repression and concealing key economic data during its final years in office.
According to the Foreign Ministry, President Faye believes Sall’s candidacy is in the interest of both Senegal and the African continent.
Sall was initially nominated for the UN’s top job earlier this year by Burundi, the current Chair of the African Union.
However, his return to Senegal has also revived calls from critics demanding accountability over the deadly unrest that occurred during the closing years of his administration.
