The Spanish captain was named the 2026 FIFA World Cup’s best player. His role as the midfield tempo-setter was considered decisive in Spain’s unbeaten run, during which they conceded only one goal.
“It feels like the perfect script. I certainly didn’t expect this,” he said after receiving FIFA’s Player of the Tournament award.
“I’d love for the younger generations to see that a player who touches the heavens, then descends into hell, can come back. It’s a lesson in overcoming adversity.”
The 30-year-old joined football greats Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Muller and Zinedine Zidane as the only men to win the World Cup and European Championship at international level, the European Cup/Champions League with his club, and the Ballon d’Or.
Unai Simón (Golden Glove)
Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón earned the top goalkeeping prize after an incredible defensive showing, recording seven clean sheets in eight matches.
Simon also set a new record of 650 consecutive minutes without conceding.
Pau Cubarsí (FIFA Best Young Player)
The 19-year-old Barcelona defender, Pau Cubarsí, was recognised for his composure at the heart of Spain’s defence, playing every minute of their record-breaking defensive campaign.
Cubarsí served as the bedrock of a defence that allowed only one goal against them during the entire competition.
While Spain dominated these categories, France captain Kylian Mbappé secured the Golden Boot, becoming the first player in history to win the award in consecutive World Cup editions after scoring 10 goals in the 2026 tournament.
