Memories of Afrobeat legend and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti will be revived in Ilorin, Kwara State, as an exhibition celebrating his life and enduring legacy opens to the public on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Titled “Fela-A Retrospective,” the exhibition is part of efforts to promote Kwara State’s creative economy and preserve its cultural heritage, in line with the vision of the state governor.
The exhibition will take place at the Institute of Contemporary African Art and Film (ICAAF), Ilorin. Curated and produced by June Creative Art Advisory (JCAA), it will run until December 31, 2026, with free admission for the public.
According to a statement issued in Ilo’rin by the state Commissioner for Communications, Bolanle Olukoju, ”the exhibition will showcase photographs, archival materials, music, films and historical objects highlighting Fela’s contributions to Afrobeat, art and social thought.”
It will also spotlight his memorable performance at the Niger Hotel in Ilorin on August 30, 1971.
The programme will include guided tours, school visits and workshops designed to introduce young people and the wider public to creative disciplines, preserve cultural heritage and promote the growth of Kwara State’s creative economy.
The exhibition is also expected to motivate emerging creatives by showcasing how music, art, film, design and other creative fields can be used for self-expression, cultural preservation and social transformation.
Olukoju noted that the initiative supports Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s vision of leveraging Kwara State’s cultural heritage, creative talents and tourism opportunities to drive development.
