TCN Begins Major Kano-Katsina 330kV Transmission Project

By Kamilu Lawal, Katsina

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) says it is advancing the construction of a major 330kV transmission line from Kano to Katsina, described as the largest transmission project of its kind in Nigeria, alongside a new 330kV substation near the Katsina Steel Rolling Company.

The Managing Director of TCN, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this while speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the Northern Nigeria Youth Stakeholders Conference organised by the Network for Good Governance and Transparency (NGGT) in Katsina.

The conference, which brought together stakeholders to deliberate on challenges confronting Northern Nigeria and possible solutions, was held with the theme: “Evidence-Based Programme, Sincere Implementation and Social Inclusion as Panacea for Development in Nigeria.”

Abdulaziz said the Kano-Katsina 330kV transmission project was among the major infrastructure interventions being undertaken by TCN to strengthen electricity transmission capacity and improve power supply in Katsina State and the wider North-West.

He explained that “the transmission line would run from Kano to Katsina, where TCN was constructing a major 330kV substation close to the Katsina Steel Rolling Company.”

According to him, key equipment required for the substation, including major power transformers, had already been delivered and stored at the project site in readiness for installation.

The TCN Managing Director also disclosed that the company was executing another major transmission project linking Katsina with Malumfashi through Kurfi, Dutsin-ma and Kankara.

He said TCN was developing substations in the four locations along the route as part of efforts to strengthen electricity supply and improve the stability of the transmission network across the state.

Abdulaziz further revealed that TCN had secured land for the construction of a new substation in Mashi, with the company set to commence the project after completing the payment of land compensation.

He announced that a major transformer had been installed and connected at Kankia and would soon be commissioned in the presence of the Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe.

The TCN chief said; “the various projects represented significant investments by the Federal Government in Katsina’s electricity infrastructure, aimed at improving the availability and reliability of power to support economic activities.’

He noted that a stronger transmission network would provide the foundation for improved electricity supply to industries and small-scale businesses, helping to stimulate production, create employment opportunities and reduce poverty.

Abdulaziz said “the development of reliable electricity infrastructure remained critical to Nigeria’s economic transformation, particularly through improved support for industries and small- and medium-scale enterprises.”

He expressed optimism that the completion of the projects would significantly enhance electricity transmission capacity in Katsina State and contribute to broader efforts to strengthen the country’s power sector.
