Bangkok’s Governor, Chadchart Sittipunt has declared Thailand’s capital city a disaster-affected zone after residents woke up to widespread flooding with some roads submerged, and the prospect of more rain.
Bangkok has experienced more than 24 hours of continuous rainfall, exceeding 150 mm in some parts of the city.
The weather agency forecast thunderstorms and heavy to very heavy rain over the weekend.
Sittipunt said the situation “poses a risk to people’s lives as well as damage to public and private property.”

The government has issued an emergency advisory for people living near canals to move possessions to higher ground.
Vehicles were submerged in floodwater, while emergency services assisted.
The Bangkok City Administration said it has opened a shelter for evacuees.
