The Special Assistant to the Ebonyi State Governor on Adult Education and Mass Literacy, Mrs Stella Nwagu, has commended the efforts of Governor Francis Nwifuru in supporting adult education in the state.
Nwagu gave the commendation during an event to commemorate World Literacy Day in Abakaliki, the state capital.
She urged adults who are not literate to enrol in adult education programmes, saying literacy would help them adapt to technological changes in society.
Nwagu also urged women who are yet to receive formal education to take advantage of available adult education programmes.
“Today is World Literacy Day 2026 and the theme is Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity. The essence of literacy for the people is for the development, for planet is for us when it comes to planet change and how to protect our planet and for the world.
“You know the do’s and don’ts to protect our tomorrow and for prosperity a lot of people now are going back to education that is why we have the the weekend education or evening education,” she said.
Nwagu thanked Governor Nwifuru and his wife for their support for adult education in the state, including providing a conducive learning environment and ensuring the timely payment of teachers.
She said the measures had helped improve literacy levels among residents, particularly older people and youths who missed formal education at an early age.
