The Nigerian Guild of Editors, NGE has inaugurated its Local Organizing Committee, LOC ahead of the General Convention and Election that will take place in Kano.

The seven-man committee was inaugurated on Saturday at a press conference in Kano by the President of the NGE, Mustapha Musa.

Musa said the committee was responsible for organising the convention and election as well as provision of accommodation, local transportation and feeding for the participants.

The NGE President expressed confidence that the committee members will deliver a successful convention/election which will usher in new leaders of the Guild.

He said no fewer than 258 participants are expected to converge in Kano for the Convention slated for the May 27, 2021

He said the choice of Kano state forthe convention is based on the understanding that the state is the most peaceful in the country and can easily be accessed by participants.

“We have chosen Kano for this convention because there is everything required to conduct it here.”

“There is an airport here for those coming by air from anywhere across the country.

“Kano is also peaceful’; you can’t deny it and there is peace in Kano. Lastly, even those coming from Abuja can take the train to Kaduna and come to Kano from Kaduna by road. So there is no excuse for anyone not to attend.

“We wish to thank the Kano state Governor Abdullahi Ganduje for accepting to host this convention in the state”, the NGE president said.

Leadership determined by members
The NGE president declared that the guild’s leadership, unlike the past is now determined by the members and not other external forces like the government. He added that the convention will center on the survival of the media.

“The leadership of the guild is determined by the members without any interference from external forces. It is unlike in the past that there used to be interference from the government.

“The oncoming convention will center around media survival for the benefit of all of us as practitioners”, he said.

The Chairman of the LOC, Dr. Sule Ya’u-Sule said the committee has seven members, adding that by the tradition of the NGE, it is supposed to be six members.

“Because we want to accommodate some of our colleagues from the north, that is why we incorporated one person from Sokoto so as to help us sensitise our members from the Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi States axis”, he said.

The members of the committee include: Dr Sule Ya’u-Sule as Chairman, Yusuf Abdulsalam, as Secretary with Abdulqadir Ahmed, Nasir Tahir, Sabo Guri, Dalhatu Sirajo and Dr. Halima Kamilu as members.

NGE is a non-governmental, non-partisan, non-profit making organisation, for the highest strata of working journalists who have attained the exalted position of editors in the journalism profession.
