Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has urged an end to discrimination against persons living with albinism, describing them as “golden people” who deserve respect, dignity and recognition.
The Governor made the remarks at the ARISE Town Square Meeting, Needs Assessment and Empowerment Tour of Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, where hundreds of beneficiaries received financial and livelihood support.
Reflecting on his personal experience of prejudice, Governor Eno recalled that some people once tried to body-shame him during his campaign.
Growing up with albinism wasn’t easy; I faced bullying, body shaming, and rejection. But today, by God’s grace, I stand proudly. That’s why whenever I see anyone with this skin condition, I make it a point to honour and recognise them. pic.twitter.com/HMDhjFDewn

“When we started this campaign, some people who did not have what to say said they did not want an albino Governor. They would not give us a chance in the past. They body-shamed us, they called us names, and they would not let us come to the public. But today, God has brought us out.”
Explaining why he often recognises people with albinism at public events, the Governor referred to the words of his late wife, Patience Eno.
“When you see me recognise golden people, it is because my dear wife once said to me, ‘To them you may be an albino, but to me, you are my golden boy.’ That is why anywhere I see any of them, I must recognise them. We are golden people,” he said.
In a gesture of encouragement, Governor Eno also provided cash support to people with albinism who came forward during the event, assuring them of the government’s continued recognition and empowerment.

He urged those living with albinism to embrace their identity with pride.
“Don’t go and use bleach. You are golden. Thank you, and God bless you,” he advised.
Governor Eno’s remarks and personal support drew widespread commendation from the audience and advocates, who praised his message as a strong voice of encouragement for persons with albinism in Akwa Ibom and across Nigeria.
His advocacy at the grassroots event is aimed at underscoring the broader commitment of national and sub-national governments to inclusivity under the Arise Agenda, in alignment with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
