A legal luminary in Nigeria has appealed to the Nigerian government to prioritise dialogue over confrontation in addressing the recent diplomatic issue involving the United States government.

Barrister Amobi Nzelu’s appeal followed President Donald Trump’s remarks alleging that Christians in Nigeria were facing genocide and his subsequent warning that the United States might consider military intervention if the situation was not addressed.

Speaking with Voice of Nigeria in Abuja, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria urged President Bola Tinubu to approach the matter with diplomacy and maturity for the sake of Nigeria’s international image and stability.

He said that rather than react with hostility, it would be more beneficial for Nigeria to engage the American government through formal and peaceful channels.

Barrister Nzelu said, “Communication and understanding remain the most effective ways to resolve such sensitive matters, especially those capable of affecting bilateral relations between both nations.”

He said Nigeria and the United States have maintained strong ties for decades, and it was important not to allow a misunderstanding to disrupt that relationship.

According to him, “Diplomatic dialogue would help the Nigerian government present its side of the story and clarify any misinformation surrounding the alleged persecution of Christians.”

Barrister Nzelu said, “The proper thing for them to do, rather than confront the Americans head-on, is to go out and see how they can engage them diplomatically rather than confronting the American government. They should engage him (Trump) and explain to him one thing or the other. “

He added: “Such discussions should be based on truth, transparency, and national interest.”

Nzelu has been in private legal practice in Nigeria for the last 45 years and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1980.
