The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) has concluded investigations into the alleged acts of indiscipline involving sixteen serving officers, including accusations of plotting to overthrow the government.

The report has been forwarded to the appropriate superior authority for further action in line with extant service regulations.

The Defence Headquarters had earlier, in October 2025, announced the arrest of the officers over breaches of military ethics and service regulations, sparking widespread public interest and concern over discipline within the Armed Forces.

Military procedures

In a statement issued on behalf of the Defence Headquarters, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba said that the comprehensive investigation was conducted strictly in accordance with established military procedures to ensure fairness, transparency and due process.

Major General Uba explained that the investigative panel meticulously examined all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel, including their actions, communications and alleged intentions, as part of efforts to uphold professionalism within the military.

Professional Standards

According to the findings, a number of the officers were implicated in allegations bordering on plotting to overthrow the government, acts described as wholly inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards expected of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Consequently, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations.

The Armed Forces emphasised that the measures being taken are purely disciplinary and form part of established institutional mechanisms aimed at preserving order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks.

The AFN reassured Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority, reiterating that it remains resolute in safeguarding national security and democratic governance.
