Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has unveiled plans to constitute a commission of inquiry that will probe the politically motivated violence recorded in the build up to Saturday’s governorship election.
Addressing a press conference in Osogbo, the State capital, the governor said the inquiry will be inaugurated on Monday, immediately after the conclusion of the election result to probe the circumstances leading to the attacks which have led to loss of lives.
Adeleke expressed condolences to the families of all persons who have lost their lives in incidents of violence during this election period.
“The government under my watch wishes to assure the people of Osun State that next week Monday, immediately after the election, an Independent Commission of Inquiry will be constituted to investigate all reported killings and acts of violence connected with this election period.
“We will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future.
“Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation”.
The governor said the commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that whoever is culpable is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence.
He said the government will also put in place a framework to support and compensate the families of those whose lives were lost.
Adeleke’s address was presented by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi.
