Germany Pledges Funds For Borno Recovery Initiative

Mohammed Sadiq, Maiduguri

Germany has pledged an additional 10 million euros to support the implementation of the Borno Model over the next two years, as part of efforts to consolidate peace, recovery and sustainable development in the state.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the fourth meeting of the Project Board of the United Nations Offer in Support of the Borno Model and the Steering Committee of the Peacebuilding Fund in Maiduguri, Germany’s Deputy Ambassador, Johannes Lehner, said the commitment would support the implementation of the Borno Model under the leadership of the Borno State and Nigerian Government.

Lehner said the meeting, attended by the Borno State Governor, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning and the UN Resident Coordinator, reviewed progress on the implementation of the model and explored ways of strengthening the initiative.

He expressed optimism that Germany’s continued partnership would contribute significantly to achieving lasting peace and prosperity in Borno State.

Also speaking, the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr Mohamed Malick Fall, said the meeting demonstrated the importance of bringing government, development partners, donors and the United Nations together to address the challenges confronting the North-East through a coordinated approach.

Fall said one of the major lessons from the Borno Model was that long-term challenges could only be effectively addressed when all stakeholders worked together.

He stressed that the presence of the Nigerian Government, Borno State Government, donors and the UN family demonstrated a collective commitment to addressing the challenges facing the region.

The latest German commitment is expected to support the next phase of the initiative and strengthen Borno State’s capacity to sustain peace, recovery and development beyond individual humanitarian and recovery projects.
