Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has approved the full implementation of the 2025 agreement between the Nigerian Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for staff of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University (COOU), effective January 2027.
The university’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Harrison Madubueze, announced the approval in a statement, explaining that the decision was conveyed to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kate Azuka Omenugha, through the Governing Council Chairman, Professor Peter Onwualu.
Omenugha commended Governor Soludo for fulfilling his earlier assurances, expressing gratitude on behalf of the university management, Senate, staff and students. She also acknowledged the contributions of the university’s labour unions.

The approval marked a development in efforts to resolve outstanding issues concerning lecturers’ welfare and maintain industrial stability at the state-owned institution.
According to the Public Relations Officer, full implementation of the agreement had remained unresolved under previous administrations.
Although the 2025 agreement was negotiated between the Nigerian Government and ASUU, its implementation in state-owned universities depends on decisions and funding commitments by the respective state governments.
The agreement followed longstanding disputes over university funding, remuneration and working conditions, which had contributed to recurring tensions between ASUU and government authorities.
The Anambra State Government maintained that the decision aligned with its policy of improving educators’ welfare and strengthening the university’s institutional capacity.
Implementation of the agreement at COOU is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
