The Wife of the Anambra State Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has called on Nigerians to protect, support and uphold the dignity of older persons, stressing that the treatment accorded to the elderly remains a reflection of society’s values and humanity.
In a statement issued in Awka on Monday to mark the 2026 World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Governor’s wife urged families, communities and institutions to take deliberate steps to safeguard senior citizens from neglect, discrimination, exploitation and all forms of abuse.
“As we observe World Elder Abuse Awareness Day today, we stand in renewed solidarity with our senior citizens and reaffirm our commitment to protecting their dignity, rights and well-being,” Mrs Soludo stated.
According to her, elderly men and women remain custodians of wisdom, culture and cherished societal values and therefore deserve to age with respect, care and security.

She noted that creating an enabling environment where older persons feel valued, heard and protected should be a collective responsibility.
Soludo said this year’s theme, “Addressing Abuse of Older Adults in Long-Term Care Facilities: Through Data and Action”, highlights the urgent need for governments, institutions and communities to strengthen mechanisms for protecting older persons and ensuring their welfare.
She noted that elder abuse remains a growing global concern, affecting millions of older people through physical, emotional, financial and psychological harm, often perpetrated by those entrusted with their care.
According to her, raising awareness is essential to preventing such abuse and promoting a culture of respect and inclusion.
The Governor’s wife emphasised the importance of family support systems, describing families as the first line of protection for senior citizens.
She urged younger generations to show greater compassion, patience and appreciation for the sacrifices made by older persons throughout their lives.
Mrs Soludo further called on policymakers, religious bodies, civil society organisations and community leaders to advocate for stronger social protection programmes, accessible healthcare services and policies that guarantee the rights and welfare of older persons across the country.
Soludo also encouraged Nigerians to use the occasion to reflect on the challenges facing the elderly and renew efforts towards building communities where ageing is embraced with dignity rather than fear, neglect or isolation.
“Let us use this day as a reminder that how we treat our elders reflects the strength of our humanity. Together, let us champion kindness, inclusion and support for our senior citizens, ensuring they enjoy the dignity and quality of life they truly deserve,” the Governor’s wife added.
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on 15 June to raise awareness about the abuse, neglect and mistreatment of older persons and to promote actions that protect their rights, dignity and well-being worldwide.
