Anambra Strengthens Basic Education Across Public Schools

Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Anambra State Government has intensified efforts to strengthen basic education through the distribution of free administrative statutory records to all public primary and junior secondary schools.

The exercise, coordinated by the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB) in Awka, is aimed at enhancing school administration, supporting the state’s free education policy and preparing public basic schools for a full transition from manual to digital record-keeping.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, the Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr Justina Anyadiegwu, described the distribution of school registers, diaries, official folders and other statutory records as a practical demonstration of the Soludo administration’s commitment to improving the quality of basic education through effective administration, transparency and accountability.

She said the programme complements the state’s human capital development agenda by reinforcing the free education policy, which abolished tuition and levies for pupils from nursery to Junior Secondary School (JSS3), while promoting efficient school management.

According to Anyadiegwu, the Board has concluded intensive training for head teachers and officers-in-charge on the use of digital registers and other modern administrative tools, with full migration from manual to digital record-keeping expected to commence in the next academic session.

She said the statutory records, supplied free of charge, would strengthen accountability, improve documentation and support better learning outcomes across public basic schools.

The ASUBEB chairman reaffirmed the Soludo administration’s zero tolerance for corruption, warning that teachers and school administrators who impose illegal charges or undermine the state’s free education policy would face disciplinary action.

She also disclosed that the state is expanding the deployment of digital learning facilities, including laptops and smart boards, to designated model and community primary schools as part of efforts to modernise teaching, learning and school administration.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of ASUBEB, Chinenye Anyakora, said the distribution of statutory records would strengthen transparency, boost public confidence in the state’s education reforms and improve access to quality education for children across Anambra.

She added that the exercise complements ongoing investments in digital infrastructure aimed at improving service delivery and management in public basic schools, positioning schools to meet emerging standards in education administration.

The Executive Secretary of the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, Dr Bernadine Anago, urged head teachers and other education administrators to ensure effective utilisation of the records, stressing that periodic monitoring would be conducted to ensure compliance.

In a goodwill message, the Anambra State Chairman of the Association of Primary School Head Teachers of Nigeria, Joseph Ifeanyichukwu Ikoeama, commended the state government for sustaining the free education policy and pledged the support of head teachers towards its successful implementation.

He also cautioned teachers and school authorities against collecting illegal fees in public schools, warning that anyone found violating the government’s directive would face appropriate disciplinary action.
