Dangote Cement Urges Drivers To Prioritise Road Safety

Sekinat Salam, Abeokuta

Dangote Cement Plc has urged its drivers to prioritise human life over delivery deadlines as part of efforts to promote road safety and protect road users across Nigeria.

The company’s Group Managing Director, Arvind Pathak, gave the charge at the 2026 Drivers’ Safety Retreat for Ibese Plant drivers in Ogun State, reaffirming the company’s commitment to road safety and driver welfare.

Pathak said drivers played a vital role in delivering cement across the country but stressed that no business target could justify putting human lives at risk.

“Every time you get behind the wheel, you are carrying more than a product. You are carrying the reputation of this company, the trust of other road users and, most importantly, your own life. We can replace a truck; we cannot replace a human being.” Pathak said.

He thanked the drivers for the sacrifices they made daily to keep the business running and assured them that the company would continue investing in training, capacity development, safer transport operations and welfare initiatives, while encouraging management to listen to their concerns.

“We are committed not only to providing you with the tools and training to work safely, but also to listen to your concerns and improve your welfare. When our drivers are safe, our operations are stronger and our communities are safer.” Pathak said.

The company’s Group Managing Director urged the drivers to avoid speeding, fatigue and other risky practices, emphasising that professional driving was measured by safe arrival rather than delivery speed.

“If you are tired, stop and rest. If a situation looks unsafe, do not take chances. The goal is not just to reach your destination; the goal is to return home safely to your family.” he noted.

The company’s Head of Transport, Murilo Silva, warned against reckless driving, the use of unauthorised substitute drivers and other unsafe practices, stressing that such conduct would not be tolerated.

He urged the drivers to take personal responsibility for their safety and help make Nigerian roads safer for all users.

Similarly, the traditional ruler of the host community, the Aboro of Ibeseland, Oba Rotimi Oluseyi Mulero, urged the drivers to rest whenever they felt fatigued, reminding them that their families depended on their safe return.

Some participants welcomed the opportunity to raise concerns about their welfare beyond safety training, including the rising cost of living, work-related expenses and delays in receiving drug test results.

The drivers described the retreat as a demonstration of the company’s concern for their lives beyond operational performance.

They pledged to uphold safety standards and handle their assigned trucks responsibly, recognising that protecting company assets must go hand in hand with protecting human lives.

The event also recognised outstanding performance, with awards presented to eight drivers and four fleet officers

The retreat ended with a renewed commitment by management and drivers to improve welfare, strengthen safety practices and promote safer, more efficient transportation across Dangote Cement’s distribution network.
