ECOWAS Chairman Visits Community Court of Justice

The Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal, has paid an official visit to the ECOWAS Court of Justice in Abuja.

Faye, who was accompanied by Senegal’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cheikh Niang, and representatives of the Senegalese Embassy in Nigeria, was received by the Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, Anthony Oluwatosin Ogunjimi, and the President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Ricardo Cláudio Monteiro Gonçalves.

According to a statement published on the ECOWAS website, Faye, while addressing staff of the Court, described it as the Community’s principal judicial organ and highlighted its role in upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights and promoting regional stability.

The ECOWAS Chairman reaffirmed his support for the Court in carrying out its mandate, particularly in advancing the rule of law and safeguarding the rights of citisens across the region.

In his welcome remarks, Justice Gonçalves described the visit as significant, saying “it was the first time a serving Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government had visited the Court in that capacity”.

The visit highlighted the importance of the ECOWAS Court of Justice within the Community’s institutional framework and its role in promoting justice, the rule of law and the protection of citisens’ rights.
