Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Beijing hosted a special reception, to honour the Nigerian football team that emerged champions at the just-concluded international football tournament in China’s Capital.
The event highlighted the growing importance of sports diplomacy in promoting Nigeria’s image abroad and strengthening engagement between Nigerian diplomatic missions and citizens in the diaspora.
The Flames Beijing World Cup, an amateur community-focused football tournament, attracted participants mainly from the African diaspora in China and other international amateur teams.
The 2026 edition brought together officials of the Nigerian Embassy, members of the Nigerian student community, supporters, and the Nigerian team, which delivered an outstanding performance throughout the competition to emerge overall champions.
Speaking during the reception, embassy officials described the gathering as an opportunity to celebrate the team for making Nigeria proud through discipline, patriotism, resilience and excellence on the international stage.
They noted that the occasion also provided a platform to strengthen ties between the Embassy and Nigerians resident in China, particularly students and young professionals.
The officials stressed that the team’s triumph went beyond football, describing the players as symbols of national unity and positive representation of Nigeria in the international community.
According to them, the team’s discipline, teamwork, and determination throughout the tournament significantly enhanced Nigeria’s image among participating countries and international observers.
In her remarks, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy, Ikerionwu Chiegonu Edith, congratulated the team for what she described as an extraordinary achievement.
She said the victory reflected the resilience and unity associated with the Nigerian spirit and demonstrated the power of football as a universal language capable of connecting people across cultures and continents.
Ikerionwu commended the players for using sports as a platform to project a positive image of Nigeria globally and assured them of the Embassy’s continued support for initiatives that strengthen community relations among Nigerians in China.
Responding on behalf of the team, the captain expressed appreciation to the Embassy for recognising the team’s achievement and supporting the players throughout the tournament. He described the victory as historic, noting that it marked Nigeria’s first participation and triumph in the competition.
The captain also expressed optimism that the success would pave the way for stronger cooperation between Nigerian students in China and the Embassy, while encouraging greater institutional support for sports and youth development initiatives within the Nigerian diaspora community.
