The European Union on Thursday proposed a new sanctions framework aimed at tackling migrant smuggling, human trafficking, and other forms of organised crime. The measures would include asset freezes and travel bans for those found responsible.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement, the efforts to crack down on migrant smugglers and traffickers, “We all have a common goal. To drive them out of business. And to save the lives of thousands of people who dream of a better life.”
“We in Europe must be the ones to decide who comes to us and in what circumstances.”
The proposed framework must receive unanimous approval from the European Council before it can take effect.

The announcement comes as migration policy remains a divisive issue across the EU.
Last month, the European Parliament approved sweeping migration reforms designed to speed up deportations and allow offshore detention centres. The changes have faced criticism from countries including France and Spain, with opponents arguing they are too severe and weaken protections for asylum seekers.
