First-Term Governors Back President Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

Binta Aliyu, Kebbi

A group of first-term Nigerian governors has declared support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic reforms, describing them as necessary for national recovery, and pledged continued backing for the Renewed Hope agenda beyond the 2027 general elections.

In a Communiqué issued after a meeting in Kebbi State on Tuesday, the Governors said; “Nigeria is undergoing a difficult but necessary period of economic adjustment to address longstanding fiscal, security and development challenges.”

They acknowledged the hardship being experienced by Nigerians but said the reforms are essential for long-term economic stability, improved public finances, increased investment, higher productivity and enhanced national security.

The Governors said “their support for the reforms is based on the need for policy continuity, stronger collaboration between the Federal and State Governments, and a development strategy that promotes enterprise, agriculture, innovation and productivity.”

They urged Nigerians to remain united and patient, expressing confidence that the reforms would deliver lasting benefits while calling for greater support for vulnerable citizens during the transition.

On security, the Governors condemned kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, school abductions and other violent crimes, describing them as major threats to national peace and development.

They pledged to work with the Nigerian Government, security agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders and other stakeholders to strengthen security, protect lives and property, rescue victims and bring perpetrators to justice.

The communiqué also condemned reported attacks and killings of Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

While reaffirming respect for South Africa’s sovereignty and bilateral relations, the governors called for transparent investigations, the protection of law-abiding Nigerians and other African residents, and the prosecution of those responsible.

The Governors reaffirmed their commitment to national unity, inclusive development, economic reforms and the protection of the lives and property of all Nigerians.
