Italian Media Tour Highlights Military Gains Against Northeast Terrorism

By Nokai Origin, Abuja

Operation HADIN KAI has used an international media engagement to reinforce its counter-terrorism strategy, highlighting sustained battlefield gains, improved civilian protection, and expanding efforts to restore socio-economic activities across Nigeria’s North-East as military operations continue against Boko Haram and ISWAP.

The Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North East, Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, stated that the operational assessment was presented during a courtesy visit by Mr Valerio Cataldi, Bureau Chief of African Voices and leader of the Italian Radio Television delegation, to the Headquarters of Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri.

During the engagement, the Theatre Commander, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, reaffirmed that the mission of Operation HADIN KAI remains the restoration of normalcy across the region while supporting conditions for economic recovery and civilian resettlement.

Major General Abubakar emphasised that intelligence-driven operations, combined kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, and the sustained disruption of terrorist logistics networks have compelled the surrender of terrorist commanders, fighters, and logistics collaborators while improving security for farming communities, enabling the return of internally displaced persons, and facilitating the recovery of weapons and other combat equipment.

The Theatre Commander also underscored that military operations continue to comply with International Humanitarian Law and the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s Rules of Engagement, with civilian harm mitigation remaining central to operational planning.

While acknowledging persistent threats posed by improvised explosive devices and the emerging use of armed drones by terrorist groups, he noted that enhanced operational capabilities, specialised training, technological innovation, and strategic partnerships have significantly improved the security environment across the North-East.

In his remarks, Mr Cataldi said the Italian media delegation sought to present an objective account of the sacrifices, resilience, and operational achievements of Nigerian troops while documenting the human impact of terrorism and the progress being recorded through engagements with affected communities, frontline personnel, and surrendered former insurgents.

The visit concluded with a detailed operational briefing, interactive discussions, the signing of the visitors’ register, and the presentation of souvenirs, reinforcing Operation HADIN KAI’s strategic communication efforts as part of the wider campaign against violent extremism.
