The Kaduna State has intensified flood preparedness efforts with the launch of a statewide public awareness and emergency response campaign following the release of the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction by Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet.
According to the forecast, “Kaduna is listed among states at high risk of flooding due to projected above-normal rainfall during the 2026 rainy season.”
The prediction estimates that rainfall in the state will begin between May 19 and June 10, 2026, and cease between October 5 and October 21, 2016.
The forecast also warns of a possible 21 days dry spell between June and August, a condition that could worsen flooding and related environmental challenges.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Culture, Ahmed Maiyaki, the government said; “proactive measures are being strengthened to safeguard lives and property through coordinated sensitisation and disaster response initiatives.”

“The Kaduna State Government is taking this forecast seriously. Early preparedness and public cooperation remain critical to reducing the impact of flooding on our communities,” Maiyaki stated.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Information and Culture, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency (KADSEMA), has commenced a statewide sensitisation campaign aimed at educating residents on flood prevention, mitigation, and safety measures.
Maiyaki urged residents to clear drainage channels around homes and business premises, avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse into waterways, and adopt preventive measures such as the use of sandbags and other local flood control remedies.
He also called on traditional institutions, religious leaders, media organisations, civil society groups, and other stakeholders to support government efforts by promoting environmental sanitation and disseminating verified information to the public.
As part of its proactive response strategy, KADSEMA has commenced vulnerability assessments in flood-prone communities, strengthened emergency response coordination, and begun pre-positioning for rescue operations in high-risk areas.
He said; “The safety of citizens remains a top priority for the Kaduna State Government. We will continue to work with all relevant agencies and communities to ensure timely information dissemination and effective disaster risk reduction measures throughout the rainy season.”
