United Kingdom Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party, triggering a leadership contest that will determine his successor as prime minister.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said; “he had informed King Charles III of his decision and acknowledged that he was no longer best placed to lead the party into the next general election.”
He said he had asked Labour’s governing body to set out a timetable for the leadership transition, with nominations expected to open on 9 July and close by 16 July.

Starmer said that, if a contest is held, a new party leader and prime minister would be in place before Parliament resumes in September.
He pledged to remain in office until the process is concluded and to ensure an orderly transfer of power.
“I will do everything I can to ensure an orderly transition,” Starmer said.
Stronger country
He also expressed confidence that his successor would inherit a stronger and fairer country than the one he took over following Labour’s general election victory in 2024.
Starmer, who became Labour leader in April 2020 and prime minister on 5 July 2024, is set to become the latest in a series of UK leadership changes since 2016.
