The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has urged Nigerians living abroad to project a positive image of the country by celebrating its achievements rather than focusing solely on its challenges.

This was contained in a statement by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit of NiDCOM, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, who noted that Dabiri-Erewa appealed during a visit to two distinguished Nigerians in the United Kingdom, Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, Christopher Adegoke, and the Mayor of Islington Council, Rosaline Oguro.

Describing Adegoke’s emergence as Chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, the first person from an ethnic minority background to occupy the position since the council’s establishment in 1889, Dabiri-Erewa said it was “another testament to the excellence, resilience and leadership qualities of Nigerians in the diaspora.”

She urged Nigerians abroad to act as ambassadors of the country’s success stories, stressing that, “While no nation is without challenges, Nigerians must deliberately celebrate the country’s success stories and the positive impact its citizens continue to make globally.”

During the visit, Mayor Oguro thanked the NiDCOM boss for the courtesy call and encouraged Nigerians worldwide to continue portraying the country positively wherever they reside.

Dabiri-Erewa also celebrated the academic achievements of two Nigerian medical graduates, commending Dorcas Akanbi, who graduated from Rostov State Medical University with an outstanding 4.90/5.00 cumulative grade point average, and Monilola Adeshina, who emerged as the valedictorian and best graduating student of the Medical Class of 2026 at the Medical University of Silesia.

She described their accomplishments as “a reflection of the brilliance, determination and global competitiveness of Nigerian youths,” noting that such achievements continue to elevate Nigeria’s image on the international stage.

The NiDCOM Chairman commended all four Nigerians for making the country proud and urged others in the diaspora to strive for excellence while remaining worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.

She also highlighted the ongoing reforms and infrastructure development initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, noting that they are aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and national prosperity.

Calling for greater diaspora involvement in nation-building, Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerians abroad to support national development by contributing their expertise, investments, skills and global networks.

She reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to recognising and engaging outstanding Nigerians abroad whose achievements continue to enhance the country’s global image.
