The Nigerian government has expressed profound condolences to the State of Qatar following the passing of its former Emir and Father Amir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the government described the late Sheikh Hamad, who served as Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013, as a visionary leader whose transformative leadership played a pivotal role in the country’s development and modernisation.

The statement noted that Sheikh Hamad’s wisdom, dedication to progress and commitment to international co-operation earned him admiration in Qatar, across the Gulf region and among the international community.

On behalf of the Government and people of Nigeria, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, extended heartfelt condolences to the Amir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani; the Al Thani family; and the people of Qatar.

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Qatar during this period of mourning and prayed for the peaceful repose of the late Father Amir.

Nigeria stands in solidarity with Qatar during this time of grief and prays that Almighty God grants His Highness the Father Amir eternal rest in paradise, grants his family and the Qatari people patience and solace, and gives them strength and comfort during this difficult time,” the statement said.
